The music of The Shadows and The Surfaris awakened Big Al's interest in music in the early 1960s; the UK version of The Surfaris Play LP was his first purchase and a particularly strong influence and he will always quote The Ventures In Space as being his favourite album of all time and in any style. Since 1989 Big Al has published PIPELINE, the world's No.1 rock instrumental magazine, along with his co-editor Dave Burke. He promoted Pipeline Magazine's annual Instrumental Convention which ran from 1993 to 2014 with live acts from around the world, including special reunions of several '60s groups. Big Al's CD credits include compiling "The Birth Of Surf" series on Ace Records as well as the notes for Rockbeat Records' 4CD set "Surf-Age Nuggets" and their two Dick Dale compilations.
